Frequently Asked Questions

What is an adjustment?

An adjustment or manipulation is performed only by the Chiropractor by using specific force in a precise direction, applied to a joint that is “fixated” or “subluxated” and not moving properly. This adds motion to the joint, helping the bones return to a more normal position, thus alleviating pain and improving nervous system function.

Does an adjustment hurt?

An adjustment usually involves a quick thrust with the doctor’s hands, and in general does not hurt.  Chiropractors DO NOT CRACK BONES.  In some cases where muscles have experienced trauma and are inflamed or in spasm, the doctor will administer therapy to relax muscles and make the adjustment easier.  There are also occasions when the doctor will use an instrument call an Activator to perform the adjustment.

Is Chiropractic Safe?

Chiropractic has an excellent safety record!  It is the result of a conservative approach to health that avoids invasive procedures or addictive drugs.  Chiropractic is a natural approach to better health.

How do I get subluxations?

Physical causes such as slips and falls, accidents, improper lifting and repetitive motion are some contributing factors of subluxations.  Emotions such as grief, fear and especially stress can cause subluxations as well.  Chemical causes could include drugs, alcohol, pollution and poor diet.

What makes the sound during an adjustment?

Lubricating fluids separate the bones of each spinal joint.  A manipulation can produce a “popping” sound when the gas and fluids in the joint shift, much like popping a cork or removing a suction cup.  This sound is not caused from “cracking bones”.

What is Whiplash?

Whiplash is a general description of how an injury occurs. It is not a condition, disease, or even a symptom. When a person suffers a whiplash-type injury, it means there body was thrown around in a whip-like manner. The majority of whiplash type injuries may cause damage to the neck’s ligaments, tendons, muscles, and the spinal vertebral alignment. This can cause moderate to severe pain or injuries. Symptoms can include pain and/or stiffness, headache, numbness, and tingling in arms, hands, and fingers, or pain between the shoulder blades. You should be evaluated by a Chiropractor even if you do not think that your injuries are severe.
